The Raging Grannies of Toronto

The Raging Grannies are caring older women who use song to protest, and to raise awareness of issues of peace, the environment and social justice.

The Toronto Raging Grannies (the first Gaggle outside of BC, and the fourth EVER) got started in November 1989. Their first issue was NATO's fighter-bomber training over unceded lands of the Innu in Labrador. This included joining with Ottawa and Montreal Grans to protest in front of Parliament.

A highlight of the Toronto Grannies' career occurred in May 1999, when three Grannies hit the international stage singing at the closing ceremonies of the Hague Appeal for Peace, before an audience of 2,500, while thousands more watched on jumbo screens outside the theatre! The song, Gaggle of Grannies, brought a standing ovation. They now travel the world on the Hague for Peace video, and on its CD, Bye Bye War, which carries a message now more listened to than ever.

At home, the Toronto Grannies provide tart and timely voices in deputations before city authorities, against privatisation of the water system and and against lean, mean policies hurting the poor.

Founding members of the group share a history of action in feminist, environmental and social issues. They currently number around 15 members. Ages range from early forties to mid-eighties. Grannies' careers include communications, child care, nursing and social work. Members have also included a minister and a Roman Catholic nun; you need not be a grandmother - or even a mother - to be a Raging Granny!

In Their Own Words

We're just a gaggle of grannies,
Urging you up off your fannies,
We're here to protest . . .
Put violence to rest
No more war!
