First Week of September

It's the most wonderful time of the year . . . in more ways than one! I really like the ad on television about the father thrilled the kids are going back to school. I can relate! Even though mine are almost done high school it still is a relief when they are back into a routine.

Second Week of September

I was in the throes of renovating the kitchen with my husband Joe and daughter Caitlin. This process began back in May when I decided to paint the dining room red! My husband was off on a motorcycle trip around the Great Lakes and it seemed like it would be a nice surprise. Well not only was my husband surprised, so was I when I discovered that the wallpaper came off with a great deal of wall attached to it. It meant quite extensive patching, a feat beyond my capabilities. So it was SURPRISE! and my husband got down to patching. Which then led to building a bulkhead for new lighting in the kitchen proper. Which then led to building a new wall and peninsula. Logical right? Well actually we had talked of renovating the kitchen. It was the final frontier in what has turned out to be a 13 year renovation project (our house). Of course things have not moved as quickly as they might have because it was pretty hot this summer and of course I was off having lots of adventures. We are finally down to the home stretch. I am quite pleased with how the peninsula turned out and I even discovered how to use Venetian Plaster to create an old world look in the kitchen. We painted our cupboards with a Teflon-based paint which wasn't too bad (but was not the same as melamine for shine). The great thing about it was that it was latex and therefore water-based and easy to clean up. We still need to finish the backsplash and countertop. Then . . . well who am I kidding we won't be done renovating. I am sure something else will come up!

3rd Annual Blue Meanie Reunion (Sept 23 - 25)

You know that song “The Boys Are Back in Town” well . . . my childhood girlfriends give new meaning to it. A few years a back as a result of a high school reunion, we decided it was time that the “Blue Meanies” got together for a reunion of our own. We were dubbed the Blue Meanies in the 70's by an ex-brother-in-law. Why you might ask? Well I don't know if any of you remember but kangaroo jackets (now called hoodies by my kids) were quite popular in the late 70's (at least with me and my friends) and as we were walking up to my house, all in identical blue kangaroo jackets, my ex-brother-in-law said “Don't look now, but here come the Blue Meanies”. And the rest is history. (Don't know if I am infringing on any copyright laws but it is just a harmless bit of fun.) Anyway, that first weekend reunion at Alice's family cottage at Lake Eugenia, has turned into an annual event. Kudos to Heather & Cathy who come all the way from Oregon and California. We spend our reunion talking about what¹s new in our lives, sharing the joys and sorrows, remembering when and looking ahead! I value good friends and am so glad that we are together again - and wreaking havoc wherever we go!

Les Miserables (September 29th)

I finally got to see the musical Les Miserables at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. I quite enjoyed the production. The set was amazingly simple but effective. One minute it was an inn and the next minute the barricades for the revolution. Jean Val Jean although the star of the play had his thunder stolen (I think) by the crafty innkeeper and his grasping wife! Loads of fun!
